Exbury Egg

Simple Living In The Exbury Egg With George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces

The Exbury Egg is the most awesome looking thing, floating on the water, what could strike you as something surreal, but in reality it is just beautiful. It is so unexpected you find that you just accept it and stare at it in amazement.

However, this sculptured and truly amazing space has a purpose, which is to act as a piece of art itself, that changes over the year, and as a studio for an artist in residence to gain inspiration from being part of the tidal creed in which it is moored.

Climb aboard and you notice it rises and falls on the tide, pulling itself off from the muddy riverbed with a delightful pop as it floats free. The place both in design, and its’ environment is poetic.

For the ‘Amazing Spaces’ book it didn’t feel right to add much to this space. It is an uncomplicated space where the comforts of life need to be addressed but in a relevant and simple way.

I put my mind to just what would that be, and what items were simple yet had beauty and integrity, that would feel at home in the space. Here are a few of them:

Metal stool….

This came from The Paint House in Northcote Road, London. I like the classic design, with 3 legs for stability, an adjustable height, the curved edge to the top and lovely finish.

Vintage Welsh blanket …

From The Great English Outdoors in Hay on Wye. Beyond question this is one of my favourite stores… ever! It has a collection of vintage welsh blankets that are truly beautiful and have integrity quite beyond many modern blankets. In terms of this piece fitting with the Exbury Egg, I particularly liked the idea of having a vintage piece in the most innovative of new structures.

Glass Jar lamp…

I used one of my own but originally it came from Pedlars. With its solid wide base, I felt that it had a stability, and rather than being an overly decorative piece it has all the components on show in a beautiful and simple way.

Sage Green Earthenware mugs…

The mugs I used to create a simple and homely feel came from Jamie Oliver.
