Small Space Strategies: Multi-Purpose Furniture
When you are designing, styling or updating a small space - whether it’s in a caravan, campervan, shed, hut or apartment - it’s wise to include as one of your small space strategies the use of multi-purpose furniture.
When space is at a premium it is natural to want to use one area for a multitude of functions. We have seen it in the development of caravans and campervans over the years, and now we are seeing it in every day living space, which is fast becoming an expensive and unobtainable commodity across the world.
I have witnesses many interesting ways others have used a space efficiently, and the type of furniture they have had designed and built or have simply developed themselves. It doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but it does help if you know what options there are and the clever small space strategies available to help inspire you for your own project.
The Beach Hut
A beach huts appeal is timeless and idyllic, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be clever too. While working on Amazing Spaces I had the pleasure of witnessing what one owner had done to their hut. They had managed to make it multi-functional, practical and able to meet the needs of the family that used it. The Lego Apartment
I have never been more impressed by a small space, how it has ben designed and the final layout than I was when I saw the amazing Barcelona apartment, also known as the lego apartment. Its owner, Christian, took inspiration from boats and Japanese housing solutions to develop a space which provided everything a person might need.

George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces
The multi-purpose furniture George and others designed and made in series 1 for his static caravan included a bath sofa, extensive seating storage, and a clever adjustable inside and outside kitchen and seating area. There are so many manufacturers of clever multi-purpose furniture, and this short video demonstrates the type of units available on the open market. It certainly should give you a lot of inspiration and a few ideas of your own.
