Styling Tips For Your Own Amazing Space

It’s always a lovely thing to share ideas, although of course this topic is far deeper than I can cover in just one blog post, but here is an overview of the design ethos I have used for my books and now for the TV show to get you started when designing and styling your own small space project.

Take your design inspiration from your desired purpose and location…

Several of the builds featured in Amazing Spaces were visually anchored in their environment, whether it is the beach or woodland. When you design your own space think about the colours and textures you’ll see out of the window and use that as a starting point. Creating ideas costs nothing and the best advice is to always start from the beginning.

Don’t be frightened to do something different…

Embrace and enjoy this opportunity to branch out to do something different. Don’t just adopt what you’ve always done at home. Instead think about what’s right for the space, what you’ve always wanted to do and what you’ve never had the opportunity to explore… until now.

Bear in mind all seasons…

If you put a lot of effort into developing a space you’ll want it to be comfortable whatever the time of year. Think about what you will need for all seasons so you’l be able to make full use of over the year. Take a beach hut for instance, think about how you might equip and furnish it so that you can still enjoy it on a crisp winters day as well as during the summer break.

Don’t forget safety…

Wood-burning stoves are incredibly popular in most cabins, but it is important to be sure to check the safety regulations before you start. The size and material of the hearth and the flue should all be considered carefully.

Add some luxury…

Luxury in small spaces with a rural feel goes really well when trying to make a space special. A mohair throw, a vintage lamp, a lovely painting all help lift a space into something special and individual.

Always style inside and out…

The area outside the building, whether it’s a yard, deck, or entranceway, should always be given a bit of attention. Making an awning, finding some good weatherproof chairs and lanterns have the effect of expanding the space and linking the inside to the outside.

Rethink and Reuse…

I always find it charming to re-use some of the features from the original site within a space. Your own architectural salvage is the best kind.

Be Practical…

If your space is one that you can sleep in, make sure the curtains or blinds have opaque or blackout lining. Don’t forget that it gets light at 5 am in the summer.

Make it a home from home…

Adding layers of texture always helps a space feel liveable and comfortable. Layer a sheepskin onto a patterned blanket and think about mixing a hand-knitted throw with velvet or other soft, smooth textured cushions.

Step into a more creative and imaginative world…

A collection of old books adds interest both in terms of decoration and in their content. Old recipe books, maps, ‘how to’ books also help your mind to step out of the normal and into a more creative and imaginative personal space. Then who knows where your ideas will take you next.
