Airstreams And Our Passion For Vintage Style

This week I had to research Airstreams for a job I’m involved with. As I was browsing information about them on the Internet I started wondering how they have managed to survive so many decades of style and maintain their popularity for so long.

Airstreams achieved global recognition in 1969, when Apollo 11 first landed on the moon, and were seen as pioneering with their distinctive style of exposed rivets and segmented panels. Since then Airstreams have become icons, with their owners parting with large sums of money, most of us can only dream of, to buy something that is just a shell and still needs a significant amount of love and attention.

Another name for Airstreams is ‘Silver Bullets’, obviously driven by their outward appearance. Maybe this is why Mark named his 1958 Custom (above) ‘John Wayne’.

Mark told me…

All the original features are still in place, including gas fitments and the dark wooden panelling, which makes it feel so warm.

Because of their shape these trailers provide a long space that can be a series of adjoining rooms, providing a real home from home and making them both practical and gorgeous.

When you look at the outer aluminium riveted shell and the inner vintage style it becomes quite obvious why they have remained so sought after, regardless of their price, and are in more demand today than they were when they first rolled off the production line.

They are an ageless icon and totally unforgettable, with a shiny silver exterior that seems to act as a magnet for passionate individuals who have a ferocious appetite for vintage style.
